Sumter officers investigate shooting near South Sumter Street; Wilder Elementary, Bates Middle placed temporarily on lockdown

Sumter Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred Monday afternoon.

According to the agency, a man was shot near the South Sumter and Atlantic streets area about 2:30 p.m.

Out of an abundance of caution, Wilder Elementary and Bates Middle schools were temporarily placed on lockdown as officers continue to look for the person seen walking/running from where the shooting occurred.

The investigation is active and details are not available for release at this time.

Anyone who saw or heard anything in the area of West Williams, Lawson and Atlantic streets before or after 2:30 p.m. is asked to contact the police department immediately at (803) 436-2700.
