Sumter County Sheriff’s Office warns public of scammer impersonating law enforcement

Calls coming from an alleged law enforcement officer have raised red flags throughout the community, and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to be “on their guard.”

According to Public Information Officer Mark Bordeaux, a caller identifying himself as “Sgt. Danny Mobley,” calling from (803) 889-8834, tells potential victims they have an outstanding warrant or fines due. He then attempts to convince them to make payments electronically or by giving their personal credit card information over the phone.

Sheriff Anthony Dennis urges residents to not give personal information to anyone without confirming the legitimacy of the agency and individual.

“If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, you may always call our office directly to confirm whether or not we have called,” Dennis said. “Law enforcement will never request payment by phone, text or email. You should be skeptical of anyone who asks you for personal information and/or payment.”

To lower the risk of being scammed, the sheriff's office encourages residents to screen their phone calls. If you do not know the caller, let it go to voicemail, and if they want to talk, they will leave a message, the sheriff’s office said.

If you have been the victim of fraud and someone has scammed you, report it to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2000.
