There’s a new statewide program that celebrates schools and school districts that make a significant commitment to welcome and support military families.

This morning, Sumter School District became only the fourth district in the state to receive the Purple Star designation from the Department of Education, and they held a special ceremony to honor the accomplishment.

20th Fighter Wing Commander Col. Larry Sullivan joined Superintendent Penelope Martin-Knox and state education representatives for the announcement, and we went to learn more about the honor and what Sumter did to earn it.
