"I felt at home," the 6-foot-8-inch Felder said of his official visit to Boston College and what made him decide to commit to the school. "I was comfortable being there and I fit right in with them. I liked what the coaches were telling me."
"It's a great institution," Sumter head basketball coach Shawn Jones said. "You can't go wrong with a Boston College education. It fit perfectly; it's an ACC and Power 5 school, and it's an opportunity to play on the national stage."
Felder chose Boston College over Louisiana State, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech and Murray State. Jones said he was recruited by Clemson, but not by South Carolina.
Felder is excited to play in the ACC and take on traditional powerhouses like Duke and North Carolina.
"I'm excited to play them," Felder said of the ACC schedule. "I know people on both sides, and I want to show them that they picked the wrong player. I'm excited and I look forward to it."
Playing basketball at Sumter has helped Felder develop into the player he is today.
"Coach Jones taught me a lot," Felder said. "He taught me to keep your head up, play through adversity and be confident in yourself."
"He's a big piece," Jones said of Felder's importance in his program. "We have eight seniors and he fits well. We have three other guys being recruited - one borderline mid-major, two (NCAA) Division II guys and one junior college.
"There's no lack of hard workers here," Jones said. "We work hard and try to get to the next level and play college basketball. We try to create an atmosphere where that can happen, and that's a testament to Calvin, that we're doing something right.
Jones has an idea of how Boston College will utilize Felder.
"I think they'll play him on the perimeter," he said.
Felder averaged 8.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game last season.
