Theodore Alison Lide Jr., 88, of Arbor Acres Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, entered into the immediate presence of his Lord on Monday, Nov. 13, 2023.
He was born on March 2, 1935, in Reidsville, North Carolina, to the late Theodore Alison Lide Sr. and Sarah Helen Jones Lide. Ted was lovingly raised by his aunt, Cecile "Sister," and uncle, Judge Eugene "Uncle Weetie" Purdy in Sumter, and graduated from Sumter High School. He later graduated from Wofford College and was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and Wofford Glee Club. Ted was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served three tours in Vietnam in the 1st Infantry Division "Big Red One." Ted valued his service and attained the rank of major. Ted raised his family in Barrington, Rhode Island, where he was an active member at Riverside Covenant Church, serving as chairman. Mr. Lide was a faithful Christian, was a spiritual mentor to many and known for serving others.
Ted was a franchisee for 50 years with Kentucky Fried Chicken, owning up to six restaurants at one time. Upon retirement, he moved to the Brick Landing Community in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina. He wed Athalia Averitt and shared six years, until her passing. Ted later married Sue Allred and spent nine wonderful years together. They enjoyed their time at the beach with many friends and were members of Camp United Methodist. They moved to Winston-Salem to be closer to family and rejoined Mizpah Moravian Church. Ted was an avid golfer, loved animals and, as Red Sox fan, he enjoyed trips to Florida to watch spring training.
He is survived by two daughters, Becky Lide Fowler of Johnston, Rhode Island, and Catherine Yamasaki (Curtis) of Long Beach, California; grandchildren, David Yamasaki and Matthew Fowler (Pamela); half brother, Al Womble; stepchildren, Natalie Smith, Leslie Yates (Kevin) and Julie Long (Chuck); six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, Kylie, Noah and Ethan Fowler; and former spouse and mother to his children, Mary Jane Lide.
In addition to his parents, aunt and uncle, Ted was preceded in death by his second wife, Athalia, and third wife, Sue Lide.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Arbor Acres and Trellis Supportive Care for the love and care given to Ted.
