School is out, summer is here, and youth are looking for productive ways to spend their days. Sumter County Sheriff's Office is looking to help with that.
Sumter County Sheriff's Office will host its Boys & Girls Youth Inc. Summer Day Camp from July 6 to July 10.
The camp is designed to help boys and girls, ages 7-16, to build character and leadership skills.
There will be workshops and discussions surrounding human trafficking, positive and negative effects of social media, gang and drug awareness, information technology, career goal attainment and much more.
Campers will also tour Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center. According to a letter to parents, the visit will be guided by sheriff's office personnel and allow youth to observe designated areas of the facility, learn about detention center procedures and ask questions in an educational setting, all to gain a better understanding of the criminal justice system, detention center operations and the responsibilities of law enforcement professionals.
"The purpose of this visit is to educate in nature and is intended to promote awareness, responsibility and informed decision-making among young people," the letter reads.
The week will end with a field day filled with games, recreational activities, static displays and demonstrations.
For this active day camp, each camper should bring a towel, sunscreen and medication, if needed. Dress codes for campers are the following: campers may wear shorts whose length extends to the knees, skirts must be knee length or longer and shirts exposing cleavage and a camper's midriff are not permitted.
Cellphones will be allowed; however, there will be limited access to them. The sheriff's office will not be responsible for any lost items.
Breakfast and lunch will be provided by the sheriff's office.
Campers may be dropped off between 7-8 a.m. and picked up between 4-5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at Crestwood High School, 2000 Oswego Highway. Registration is $100 per camper. Applications must be submitted by Tuesday, June 30. Applications can be found at tinyurl.com/2jvffkwj or by picking up a camper packet at the sheriff's office at 1281 N. Main St. For more information, contact the sheriff's office at (803) 436-2000 or visit www.sumtersheriff.org.
