Author Derek Smith will speak on his 12th book, "Revolutionary Camden, South Carolina's Bloody Epicenter in the War for Independence," at the next membership meeting of Sumter County Genealogical Society at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, in the fellowship hall of Swan Lake Presbyterian Church, 912 Haynsworth St.
Smith, a native of Bishopville and a graduate of Georgia Southern University, has written extensively on the American Civil War.
Camden, which will be the center of his talk, was the scene of two major battles during the Revolutionary War and a crossroads for both armies during the Southern campaign. Smith will present the interesting and brutal history of the patriots' fight for freedom. Refreshments will be served after the speaker's presentation.
The society meets monthly from September through May. Visitors are welcome to attend, and admission is free to the public. Interested persons can join the society. Membership includes four newsletters during the year and free use of Sumter County Genealogical Society Research Center. Annual dues are $30 for an individual membership and $35 for a family.
