A police pursuit ended after a fleeing vehicle hit a tree on Saturday night.

According to an incident report obtained from Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating as an independent agency, the chase occurred around 6:45 p.m. on July 4 and involved South Carolina Highway Patrol and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

The trooper led the pursuit, and the Sumter deputy assisted by deploying spike strips to disable the suspect’s vehicle.

The fleeing vehicle then ran off the roadway and struck a tree in the 1800 block of Queen Chapel Road in Sumter, according to the report.

Because of their involvement, neither HP nor the sheriff’s office was able to investigate the wreck.

Kershaw County’s incident report does not detail what led to the pursuit.

Mark Bordeaux, public information officer with Sumter County Sheriff's Office, said the driver of the fleeing vehicle was injured but appeared to be in stable condition.

South Carolina Highway Patrol is the charging agency; however, no additonal information has been released.
