Community Literacy Lab Microschool reached a major literacy milestone Saturday, July 25, during the 5th Annual Krawlin' for Christ Jeep Show and Shine at Sumter County Civic Center.

Throughout the event, Community Literacy Lab Microschool distributed 227 free books to children, teenagers and adults. The giveaway brought the organization's total number of books distributed since January 2017 to 10,002.

"Reaching 10,002 books is about much more than a number," said Penny Esterley, director of literacy and learning initiatives at Community Literacy Lab. "Every book placed into someone's hands is an opportunity to read, learn and discover something new. We are thankful to everyone who has donated books, volunteered and helped us reach families throughout the community."

Randy Esterley, director of program operations and community leadership, said the milestone reflects years of teamwork and community support.

"This accomplishment belongs to everyone who has helped collect, organize, transport and distribute books over the years," he said. "Seeing families choose books together reminds us why this work is so important."

The Krawlin' for Christ event featured indoor and outdoor vehicle displays, live gospel music, entertainment, vendors and the Jeep Show and Shine competition. Admission was free to the public, and proceeds from the event benefited St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Community Literacy Lab participated by hosting a free book giveaway and sharing information about its educational services. The Sumter nonprofit provides K-12 tutoring, grades 3-12 microschool classes, academic support, STEM and coding activities, clubs, assessments and other learning opportunities.

Community Literacy Lab thanks the organizers of Krawlin' for Christ for allowing the organization to participate, as well as the volunteers, donors, community partners and families who helped make the 10,002-book milestone possible.
