Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker released the name of the victim in the two-vehicle wreck that occurred Monday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Trevino Hall, 36, of Sumter, Baker said.
According to Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway with South Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at about 2:36 p.m. on July 6.
A 2019 Hyundai SUV was traveling north and a 2017 Ford SUV was traveling south. The 2017 Ford SUV crossed the center line, colliding head-on with the 2019 Hyundai SUV, Ridgeway said.
The driver of the Ford SUV was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Hall, the driver of the Hyundai SUV, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to Baker.
Hall was assistant coach for Sumter High School boys varsity basketball team.
In a statement released by Sumter School District Superintendent Dr. Gerald Gary, he described Hall as a “dedicated mentor and coach who made a meaningful difference in the lives of many students.”
“His commitment to supporting and encouraging young people extended far beyond the basketball court,” Gary said. “He will be remembered for the positive impact he had on the Sumter High School community.”
The district extended its condolences to Coach Hall’s family, friends, colleagues and students.
Next of kin for Hall has been notified, and an autopsy is scheduled for Friday at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
An investigation is ongoing by South Carolina Highway Patrol.
