As I write this, the forecast calls for 99 degrees today and tomorrow, with 101 the day after that, but better days are (hopefully) in sight with fall approaching.
The kids are back in school, the Friday night lights have returned, camo gear and sweaters are already on the clothing store racks, and soon the weather will be a bit more cooperative for spending time outdoors. And I'm more than ready for the pesky mosquitoes' numbers to be reduced as cooler weather gets here.
In keeping with that change this time of year, this issue of The Sumter Item Impact is all about the outdoors.
This year, Sumter Green is celebrating 30 years of beautifying our county, and the group is inviting the community to help it continue to grow its green legacy. Starting in 1996, the group has beautified areas of Sumter, including around welcome signs, to "make Sumter brighter and more inviting," according to its website. We wrote a bit about their efforts, mission and anniversary for this issue, plus how you can get involved if you'd like. Its annual Fall Feast fundraiser is coming up Thursday, Oct. 22, at USC Sumter. Enjoy a night outside with a live band, unique foods from local vendors and chefs, and know you're supporting the group's efforts at the same time.
We've also taken a look at the Y's Camp Mac Boykin, which is open each summer in Manchester State Forest for kids ages 7 to 14, looking to expand to year-round use. The camp allows kids to make new friends, learn some new skills and have fun in the outdoors.
It wouldn't be fall without hunting season starting, and we pulled together a list of programs and resources offered by our state Department of Natural Resources geared toward safety. DNR announced earlier this year that the number of hunting-related fatalities has decreased, thanks to education outreach efforts, but more is needed to reach zero deaths.
As it gets more comfortable outside, we hope your family enjoys this time together, whether it's taking a hunting trip, supporting your community or cheering on your favorite team.
