The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is predicting a below-normal 2026 Atlantic hurricane season.

Yet, experts are encouraging early preparation to stay safe all season - and City of Sumter is doing its part.

Touch A Truck: Storm Readiness will be held on Saturday, June 6, at Sumter County Civic Center.

The annual event allows children and adults a chance to get up close and personal with the vehicles and responders that help keep Sumter safe during severe weather and emergencies.

In a news release on May 21, forecasters with the administration's National Weather Service predicted a below-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic, which runs June 1 to Nov. 30. Forecasters estimated a 35% chance of a near-normal season, a 10% chance of an above-normal season and a 55% chance of a below-normal season.

In addition to vehicle tours, there will be activities for all ages, from face painting to food trucks to interactive experiences designed to help families better understand storm preparedness.

"Come out, explore and learn how to be storm ready," City of Sumter said.

Touch A Truck will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at 700 W. Liberty St. Admission is free and open to the public.
