One man is critically injured and another is in custody after a fight-turned-shooting occurred at a Pinewood Road convenience store on Sunday morning.

According to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for Sumter Police Department, officers responded to a shooting call at about 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 2, and they found a man inside suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim, a 24-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. He remains in critical condition, McGirt said.

Initial information indicated a fight occurred between the victim and the suspect, Keaton Alexander Garcia, 27, of Sumter, before the shooting occurred, McGirt said.

Garcia is charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, according to McGirt. His bond was denied Monday morning, and he remains at Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the police department at (803) 436-2700.
