A Sumter man was denied bond on Tuesday after being charged in connection with the death of a moped driver on Sunday morning.
At about 12:15 a.m. on June 21, officers arrived on scene of a wreck on Atlantic Avenue near Gates Street to find a moped had been struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
Marcus J. McNeil, 36, of Sumter, the driver of the moped, died at the scene, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer with Sumter Police Department.
Next of kin was notified by Sumter County Coroner’s Office, and an autopsy was scheduled.
The investigation led officers to Jaquan J. Wells, 29, who was the driver of the Jeep. McGirt said Wells was crossing over to the opposite side of Atlantic Avenue to park when the two vehicles collided.
Wells was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital by private vehicle for minor injuries and notified police of his location. He was later taken into custody after officers determined there was evidence of impairment, McGirt said.
Wells was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death and booked at the county detention center, McGirt said.
An investigation is ongoing.
