Saluting service
Last week National Commander of The American Legion Dan Wiley presented state Sen. Jeff Zell, R-Sumter, and state Rep. Cody Mitchell, R-Hartsville, with the 2026 American Legion Department of South Carolina Special Legislative Award for outstanding service. Both Zell and Mitchell previously served in the military. Zell was in the U.S. Air Force and retired from Shaw Air Force Base. Here, Zell and Mitchell (holding plaques) stand on the steps of the Statehouse on Wednesday, Feb. 25, with American Legion officials, veterans, House Speaker Murrell Smith, and other General Assembly members.
