A Summerton woman faces felony charges in connection to the death of Summerton Mayor Tony Junious.

On Wednesday, the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed 33-year-old Toni Singleton was arrested and charged with felony DUI in connection to the fatal wreck involving Junious on Jan. 27.

At about 10:45 a.m. on that  Saturday, Singleton, the driver of a 2013 Dodge Charger, was traveling north on Liberty Hill Road while Junious, the driver of a 2010 Chevrolet Impala, was traveling west on Governor Richardson Road when the two vehicles collided and Junious' vehicle struck a ditch, according to Master Trooper William Bennett.

Junious was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, Bennett said.

Singleton suffered injuries and was taken to a hospital. She was released on Feb. 3 and taken to Clarendon County Jail and Detention Center, where she remains with no bond.

Junious was Summerton's first Black mayor in a town that is home to Briggs v. Elliott, one of the cases that was the foundation of Brown v. Board of Education, which found segregation is unconstitutional.  He was laid to rest at a celebration of life service and burial on Saturday, Feb. 3, that was attended by hundreds.
