Families are invited to celebrate the end of summer with a fun-filled afternoon of stories and creativity at the Curious George Reading Adventure on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at Temple Sinai Jewish History Center, part of the Sumter Museum campus.
Inspired by the beloved children's book "Curious George Goes to the Beach," this free family program will transport children into George's seaside adventure through interactive storytelling. Young readers will travel along with George as he builds sandcastles, plays beach games, digs in the sand and discovers what happens when he tries to feed the seagulls.
In addition to bringing the story to life, the program introduces families to the remarkable true story behind Curious George. Participants will learn about the book's creators, husband-and-wife team Hans Augusto Rey and Margret Rey, German-born Jewish authors who courageously escaped Nazi-occupied Europe in 1940 with the manuscript of Curious George packed among their few belongings. Their extraordinary journey ensured that generations of children would come to know one of literature's most beloved characters.
"Curious George has inspired children to be curious, ask questions and explore the world around them for generations," said Annie Rivers, executive director at Sumter Museum. "We're excited to combine the joy of reading with hands-on learning while also sharing the incredible true story of the authors whose resilience made these books possible."
Throughout the program, children will be encouraged to make predictions, answer questions and think critically about the story, helping foster early literacy skills while creating lasting family memories.
Hosted at Temple Sinai Jewish History Center, the event reflects Sumter Museum's commitment to providing engaging educational experiences that connect history, culture and community.
The Curious George Reading Adventure is free and open to the public, and registration is not required.
