Sumter PD says driver slams into brick wall in single-vehicle crash; investigation ongoing

Sumter Police Department is investigating a fatal single-vehicle crash that occurred Saturday afternoon.

The crash occurred at about 5:21 p.m. on Saturday, July 11, at North Guignard Drive and Wactor Street.

The driver veered off North Guignard and struck at a brick wall, the department said. The driver was taken to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital where he was pronounced dead. 

Sumter County Coroner Robbie Baker identified the driver as Eric Williams, 47, of Sumter.

Next of kin has been notified and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday at Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
