James Canty, 57, entered eternal rest on Sunday, June 22, 2014.

He was born on Dec. 8, 1956, in Sumter County, a son of Margaret McFadden Canty and the late Edward Canty Sr. He attended the public schools of Sumter County. He played basketball for Furman High School and was named the most valuable player. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Thomasville, North Carolina, and was employed at Todd Sea Food.

Survivors include two daughters, Jamesha Little and Kaeyasha Little, both of High Point, North Carolina; devoted mother, Margaret McFadden Canty of Sumter; six brothers, Ivory Hickman of Sumter, Edward Canty Jr., Tony Canty, Robert (Albertha) Canty, Henry Canty and John Canty, all of Pinewood; six sisters, Shirley Coullette, Bernice (Alverice) Holland and Marguerit (Thomas) Thames, all of Pinewood, Linda Canty of Sumter, Viola Canty of Lake City and Felicia (Patrick) Shannon of Columbia; a host of other relatives and friends.

Public viewing for Mr. Canty will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the chapel of Community Funeral Home with Evangelist Susan Burgess. Burial will follow in St. John Baptist Church Cemetery, Pinewood.

The family is receiving visitors at the home of his mother, 1105 S. Hampton St., Pinewood.
