Laura Linton Singleton, 95, departed this earthly life on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, in Chesterfield, Virginia.
Born in St. Charles, South Carolina, on Nov. 10, 1930, she was the first of 11 children born to the late Robert Linton Jr. and Sarah Elizabeth Wilson Linton. Mrs. Singleton was educated in the Lee County and Sumter County public schools. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1950, and a graduate of Morris College in 1954. In her second year of college, she met the late Mr. Henry Singleton while he was serving in the United States Army. They were united in holy matrimony on Aug. 14, 1954, and to this loving union, one child was born, Milton Singleton. After relocating to New Jersey, she did further graduate studies at Newark State College, Newark, New Jersey, Kean College, Union, New Jersey, and Montclair State College in Montclair, New Jersey.
Laura was raised in a Christian home, and her spiritual journey began at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church, St. Charles, South Carolina. After moving to New Jersey, she joined Siloam-Hope Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where she attended for about 30 years. Her ministry services included the following: member of the Deacon Board, Nominating Committee, Women’s Organization, Sunday School teacher, usher, Senior Choir, chairman of the youth group, Youth Choir and an elder. Professionally, Laura was employed for many years with the New Jersey Public School System. She worked at Charlton Street School, Newark, New Jersey, and Public School Number Nine in Patterson, New Jersey, as an elementary school teacher.
Upon retirement in New Jersey, she returned to South Carolina and reunited with her church, Mt. Moriah U.M. Church, where she served as secretary and member of the Finance Committee. She later transferred her membership to Second Presbyterian Church.
In the community, she was a member of several organizations, including: Retired Teachers Association of New Jersey, Alpha Pi Chi Sorority Inc., life member of Disabled American Veterans (Auxiliary) and Morris College Alumni Association.
Laura will be remembered as a person who did what she could to be of service to all mankind. She gave her time and talent to many people and will be remembered for her smile, wit, love of life, honesty and kindness.
In addition to her parents and her late husband, Henry Singleton, she was preceded in death by her son, Milton Singleton; three brothers, Thomas Linton, Moses Linton and Eugene Linton; two sisters, Sarah Bundley and Essie Mae Shaw.
Those left to cherish happy and precious memories are her two grandchildren, Rashon (Ketia) Singleton and Keiana Nicole Singleton; seven great-grandchildren, Nazah Singleton, Ryanna Singleton, Ashleigh Singleton, Kashon Singleton, Kason Singleton, Kasyona Singleton and Amaya Allen; two great-great-grandchildren, Nayana Horne and Rhea Sporer; brothers, Robert Linton and Odell Linton; sisters, Cora (Jerry) Baker, Geraldine Scott and Gardenia (William) Hamilton; a sister-in-law, Mattie W. Linton; a brother-in-law, Junious Shaw; three goddaughters, Yvette Bundley Thomas, Sharon Holmes and Lumiska Cooper; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The family will be receiving friends at 930 Salterstown Road on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2026, from 3 to 6 p.m.; Friday, Oct. 2, from 3 to 6 p.m.; and Saturday, Oct. 3, at Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. - Sumter from 2 to 5 p.m. Public viewing will be at Second Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of service. A Witness to the Resurrection on Sunday, Oct. 4, at 1:30 p.m. will be held with interment to follow at Evergreen Memorial Park.
