RUBIN C. GATHERS

Rubin C. Gathers, 65, answered his master's call on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Lexington Medical Center, West Columbia.

Born on July 6, 1952, in Sumter County, he was the eldest son of the late Carolina and Pearl Thompson Gathers. Rubin received his education in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1971 graduate of Hillcrest High School. Rubin worked many jobs during his lifetime: bus driver, Put 'N' Take Cleaners and Georgia-Pacific. Most recently, until his health failed, he worked at Mungo Housing.

Rubin joined Wayman Chapel AME Church at a very young age and accepted Christ as his Savior there. He was very active there in his youth as a member of the youth choir and Kings Men of Wayman Chapel. He was also a member of the Wayside Singers of Sumter.

Rubin's memories will be cherished by his wife, Betty Smoot Gathers of Columbia; one son, Rubin Carnel Gathers Sr. of Sumter; three grandchildren; one stepson, John Simmons of Columbia; two brothers, Willie Charles (Diana) Gathers Sr. and Claudia (Deloris) Gathers, both of Wedgefield; two aunts, Eleanora Gathers of Wedgefield and Janie Gayle of Hampton, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will be receiving relatives and friends at the home of his brother, Claudia Gathers, 43 James Haskell Road, Wedgefield.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Wayman Chapel AME Church, 160 N. Kings Highway, Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Dennis W. Broughton Jr., pastor, eulogist.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

The procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. from the home.
