Ivorie George Lowe, a proud native of Lee County, was the beloved daughter of the late Jimmy George and Leler Scarborough George. On Friday, Nov. 1, 2024, she was called home by God, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service and love. Known for her radiant spirit and generous heart, Ivorie was deeply devoted to her family, her faith and her lifelong pursuit of knowledge.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Lowe, and is survived by her son, John Sheldon Lowe, who remained faithfully by her side in her later years; her loving sister, Dr. Ruth George Kennedy of Durham, North Carolina; and three brothers, Arthur L. George (Doreatha) of Cheraw, Kershaw George of Columbia and Dr. Ulysses Eugene George (Carolyn) of Blythewood. Ivorie’s extended family includes bonus grandsons, John Daniel Lowe, Ezra G Lowe Jr. and Robert Lowe (Frankie); many nieces, nephews, cousins and a cherished community of relatives and friends who will continue to honor her memory.
Ivorie’s life was forever changed by her decision to attend Morris College. In her own words, “I remember the moment I decided to go to Morris College. It was close to home and within my family’s budget. Out of my nine siblings, six of us attended Morris. I was inspired by the accessibility of getting help and advice when I needed it.” Reflecting on her experience, she often said, “Morris College has had a lasting impact on my career and my life. It taught me to work hard and gave me the strength to be a strong person in the world.”
With a passion for science and an innate gift for teaching, Ivorie began her career as a biology and advanced biology teacher. She later served as an administrator at Bloom High School in Chicago Heights, Illinois, where her influence inspired countless students to pursue their own academic dreams with discipline and determination.
Ivorie’s life was grounded in service — a value instilled in her from a young age by her mother, Leler George. She dedicated herself to community service and her church, actively serving on numerous boards, including the General Conference of Mennonite Churches across the U.S. and Canada. She also served as a trustee at Goshen College for 12 years and was an active member and president of the Women’s Ministry at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church. Her commitment to service led her to volunteer with the Peace Corps for two years and to volunteer on two additional occasions in Africa. She extended her volunteer efforts locally and globally. She lived by her college’s motto, “Enter to learn, depart to serve,” embodying these values with unwavering dedication.
In her later years, Ivorie embraced her “bucket list” with an adventurous spirit, traveling to all seven continents and every state in the U.S. Inspired by her mother and a fifth-grade teacher, she nurtured a boundless curiosity and love for exploration. Her travels went beyond sightseeing; they were part of a larger journey to connect with the world and appreciate its vast beauty.
Ivorie George Lowe will be remembered as a woman who walked through life boldly and humbly, guided by faith, love and an enduring commitment to others. Her legacy of grace and service will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
